Burnt Toast Design was founded six years ago by award winning furniture
designer Peter Masters. His products, combine beauty and resourcefulness
within the mass-produced market, alongside the exquisite craftsmanship
and resilience of bespoke products available for commission.
Masters approaches the industry with the aim of incorporating a variety of
materials and techniques and wherever possible using sustainable materials.
At 100% Design 2006, he was awarded "Best ECO Floor Product
Award"
for the 'horse and mad dog' tables, amazingly made
using one sheet of
sustainable plywood, 25 minutes of electricity and water based paint for the
finish.
The beauty of Masters' designs is the ability to achieve structurally striking
and complex forms using the most simple of techniques and processes.
He prides himself on re-evaluating existing manufacturing techniques and
material capabilities, like creating the afore-mentioned table using a
machine used to manufacture violins, allowing him to form unusual objects
without using complex manufacturing techniques.
Masters places high importance on all of his pieces being handmade here
in the UK, believing we have all the resources to manufacture here, and as
a result reducing manufacturing costs.
However, all of this does put boundaries on the creative and manufacturing
process, from which Masters seems to thrive:
"I feel boundaries channel the design process more specifically, it
forces a designer to be resourceful and look harder at design in an innovative
manner... some of my best work has probably evolved in
this way."
Burnt Toast's new range of tables for Glass Domain will be revealed for the
first time at 100% Design 2007. The Final stand
dining table is featured, made
using FSA tulip wood spun legs and a glass top, giving the illusion of the legs
standing upright in thin air.
Also being shown, is the Boris coffee table, made
using coloured glass, FSC
ply wood and aluminium in a striking geometrical form giving the illusion of
complex construction but as in all of Masters' designs, it is easy to create
designs, it is easy to create and uses few materials.
Burnt Toast's covetable collection includes chairs, sofas, coffee tables and
dining tables, most of which are available in a range of finishes and colours.
Some are also available in waterproof materials making them suitable for both
indoor and outdoor use; and for both commercial and domestic purposes.
Visually, Masters' pieces are sublime, comprising of elegant curved
woods,
curved woods, smooth stainless steels and crisp acrylics, Masters'
eye for subtle
duo-tone colours making them the perfect combination of striking
classic and
contemporary design.
